The natural environment and human communities work together — either to create or to resolve — social and environmental problems. The Environment and Community program focuses on the systemic connection between the two.

This program, which leads to a master's degree in environment and community, allows you to specialize in this area and benefit from other programs offered by the Center for Creative Change.

Maybe you're searching for a way to find out if graduate school is what you'd like to pursue. Or perhaps you have a bachelor's or master's degree and want to hone your leadership skills or do some serious networking. Consider a graduate-level certificate in ecological planning and design or one in environmental education.

In the master's and graduate certificate programs, you approach environmental policy and sustainability issues from both a social science and natural science perspective. If you are a professional who works in environment and community development with organizations, businesses or government agencies, these programs are designed for you. If you are interested in a permaculture career — either permaculture Northwest or in other bioregions — these programs are designed for you.

As a graduate, you’re able to apply collaborative learning and problem solving, strategic communication and critical reflection to the social and environmental challenges facing the world today.

Students and graduates explore topics of community bioregionalism, biodiversity, permaculture, sustainable development, healthy environments, appropriate technologies, alternative education, environmental education, social and environmental justice, ecopsychology, green building, deep ecology and environmental policy.
